5 Stunning Hiking Trails You Can Complete Before Lunch

Tuxedo is uniquely positioned between two of New York’s most iconic state parks, Harriman State Park and Sterling Forest State Park, both of which offer a variety of approachable, beginner-friendly trails (along with more rigorous options if you’re looking for a challenge). Whether you want a gentle lakeside stroll or a short walk to a scenic overlook, these routes provide a perfect introduction to the local terrain without requiring intense elevation gain.

Sterling Lake Loop Trail

A quintessential easy hike located right behind the Sterling Forest Visitor Center, this trail runs just under 4.5 miles, meaning you can walk it in under two hours. Expect to pass the foundations of an old church, plus a wooden bridge as you weave in and out of the woods, until eventually crossing a small inlet and following back to complete the loop.

  • Highlights: You'll encounter historic iron industry ruins and beautiful water views along the entire path.

  • Best for: Families and those looking for a very accessible, well-marked path.

Hessian Lake Loop

A short loop of 1.5 miles, this looped lake trail is paved the whole way, meaning it’s accessible for those with strollers or wheelchairs. The bright trail winds around a well-manicured lake, and with Bear Mountain so close, this trail could easily be a way to start or end the day after a more rigorous outdoor excursion in the mountain’s state park.

  • Highlights: Views of massive boulder fields and dramatic crags above the water, with a nearby dock that provides views of the Bear Mountain Bridge.

  • Best for: All ages and abilities, including those who prefer a paved surface.

Silver Mine Lake Loop

Nestled within Harriman State Park, this trail is more challenging than the previous two. You’ll follow the Menomine Trail, Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail, and Silvermine Road to complete the loop around the lake. You’ll want sturdy, water-resistant shoes for this nearly four-mile hike—if it’s recently rained, keep in mind that stream crossings might be elevated and your feet might get wet.

Highlights: The views are picturesque anytime of year, but the fall foliage is particularly standout.

Best for: Folks who feel comfortable hiking uneven, rocky terrain.

Reeves Brook Loop Trail
This trail, located within Harriman State Park, is only 3.6 miles, but you’ll find plenty packed into that relatively short route. Start in the Reeves Meadow trailhead parking area and follow the loop counterclockwise. This trail is best for more experienced hikers, as you’ll encounter rocky scrambles and a higher elevation gain than some of the others on this list. Still, visitors say it’s worth trek.

  • Highlights: This trail has it all: Waterfalls and small cascades along the brook after a rain, along with beautiful overlooks and rocky scrambles.

  • Best for: More experienced hikers who are ready for a mix of terrain.

Pine Meadow Lake Loop Trail

Coming in at just under six miles, this slightly longer loop is a moderate, but very popular trail. You’ll need sturdy boots to traverse this occasionally muddy and rocky trail, which involves a steady, slightly uphill climb on the approach, and downhill on the way back.

Highlights: Pine Meadow Lake, plus cascading creeks and dense foliage in the summer and fall.

Best for: Those with a bit more stamina who are looking for a longer hike.
